We had a talk about coffee and coffee production by Colin Barrell and found out more about his life and his passion for all things tea, coffee and Taunton! We had some really delicious cakes and tea and coffee, then Colin demonstrated how to make the perfect latte!

We had a truly fascinating and inspiring talk today at Taunton Early Birds from Neil Smart, speaking on behalf of Medical Detection Dogs.

What these dogs can do is nothing short of incredible. They are trained to detect the scent of diseases such as cancer, Parkinson’s and bacterial infections - sometimes from tiny samples like breath, sweat or urine. Their work could help lead to faster, earlier and less invasive diagnosis, potentially saving millions of lives.

Even more amazing, some of these dogs are trained as Medical Alert Assistance Dogs, supporting people with serious conditions like PoTS, Type 1 diabetes or severe allergies. They can detect subtle changes in a person’s body and warn them before a medical episode happens - giving them greater independence and peace of mind.

A huge thank you to Neil for sharing such eye-opening insights into this life-changing work. It really shows the extraordinary bond between humans and dogs, and how it can make a real difference.

Neil Smart will be our guest this month, he is coming to talk to us about Medical Detection Dogs. Medical detection dogs are highly trained canines that use their powerful sense of smell to detect specific odors associated with diseases, alerting people to impending medical events like hypoglycemic episodes, seizures, or anaphylaxis, and helping researchers identify cancers and infections (like COVID-19 or malaria) in samples, thereby saving lives and improving quality of life through early warning and diagnosis. They work in two main areas: Medical Alert Assistance (alerting owners to personal changes) and Bio-Detection (identifying disease in samples for research). This promises to be a really fascinating talk!

Our fearless Early Birds skittles team bravely made the epic journey to Bridgwater to take on Rodney Stoke & Draycott WI. Spirits were high, aim was… aspirational… It was a fun night full of laughs, great company, and only a slight misunderstanding of where the ball were supposed to go. Our opponents had the edge this time - but we like to think we generously let them win… by 80 points.

The Early Birds quiz team didn’t do too badly at the Oake Manor quiz last night. We didn’t win the actual quiz, but we did win an Easter egg in the spot questions thanks to Bev’s quick mathematic brain! A fun night out, hopefully to be repeated next month!

A really excellent March meeting, Glen Danbury fro

A really excellent March meeting, Glen Danbury from @potentialone_taunton gym came to talk to us about strength training for women and how important it is when we are getting older. We did some simple exercises to try to assess our strength and fitness then had a go at a few simple movements using tins of food as weights. At the end of the talk Glen answered questions from our members, there was lots of good advice! Our tins were then donated to @tauntonfb - a workout that does good twice!

It's our March meeting this coming Monday! We are planning a fun session all about how we can look after our bodies as we get older.

So, how strong are you? Strength training can be a wonderful way for women to feel strong, confident and supported as they get older. It helps maintain muscle, keeps bones healthy and resilient, and supports balance and mobility for everyday life. Regular strength work can also boost energy, support heart health and lift mood — especially during times of hormonal change such as menopause. Most importantly, it helps women stay independent, active and feeling good in their bodies for years to come.

Glen Danbury, a coach from Potential One, based on Silk Mills Road, will be joining us to show how we can all become a little stronger, steadier and fitter – at any age! Potential One coaches specialise in fitness for people in their 50s, 60s and beyond, so everything is welcoming, supportive and doable.

No Lycra, no pressure – just come as you are! Please bring along two tins of beans, soup, tinned fruit or something similar, as we’ll use them to try out a few gentle exercises (yes, really!). Afterwards, if you’d like, your tins can be donated to the Foodbank – a workout that does good twice over.

A really fantastic talk today by Luke Knight aka @the_knight_t4les - Luke’s enthusiasm for Somerset was a joy to see. He shared his story about how he became a content creator, talked about some of the technology that he uses and shared some of his videos either us. Luke has a huge following on social media and it’s easy to see why, he’s a natural storyteller. If you need a speaker for your group we highly recommend him!
